Proof of Ownership Requirements

When you request vehicle lockout service, car key replacement, or key programming, we have to confirm the vehicle belongs to you (or that you’re authorized to access it). This protects you, your vehicle, and your security.

This page explains what we typically require before we can unlock a car or create/program keys.

Why Proof of Ownership Is Required

Modern vehicles are designed to prevent unauthorized access. Many keys and fobs must be programmed to an immobilizer system, and lockout service provides access to property. For safety and security, we verify ownership or authorization before starting work.

What You’ll Need

In most cases, we require all three:

  • Photo ID
Driver’s license, state ID, passport, or another government-issued photo ID.
  • Vehicle registration or title
A current registration card or title that matches the vehicle and/or the customer requesting service.
  • VIN verification
We verify the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the vehicle. This may be checked at the dash, door sticker, or other manufacturer VIN location.

Name Matching and Authorization

We can usually proceed when:

  • The name on the photo ID matches the name on the registration/title, or
  • The person requesting service is clearly authorized (for example: a spouse/household member present with documentation, or a company vehicle situation with supporting paperwork).

If the name does not match, we may ask for additional verification before starting service.

Acceptable Documentation Examples

Common “good to go” scenarios

  • You have a driver’s license + registration in your name.
  • You have a title + ID and are with the vehicle.
  • You’re the authorized driver of a company vehicle and can show company documentation.

Situations that may need extra verification

  • Registration is in someone else’s name and they are not present.
  • Vehicle was recently purchased and paperwork is incomplete.
  • The vehicle is part of a fleet, rental, or employer-owned arrangement.

If You’re Locked Out and Your Documents Are Inside

This is common. In many cases, we can:

  1. Verify the VIN from the outside,
  2. Unlock the vehicle,
  3. Then confirm ID + registration/title once you can access it.

If documents cannot be produced after entry, we may not proceed with key cutting/programming.

For Lost Key Replacement and Programming

Key replacement and programming typically require the strictest verification because the new key will be able to start the vehicle. For these jobs, expect:

  • Photo ID
  • Registration/title
  • VIN verification
  • Confirmation of the vehicle’s key system and programming requirements

Some vehicles also require additional security steps depending on year, make, and model.

For Car Lockouts

Lockout service still requires verification. Depending on the situation, we may verify:

  • ID and relationship to the vehicle, and/or
  • VIN + registration once the car is opened

Our goal is to restore access safely while confirming authorization.

For Fleet, Company, or Work Vehicles

If you’re requesting service for a company vehicle, we may ask for:

  • Company ID or work authorization proof
  • Fleet documentation or a dispatch confirmation
  • Registration or insurance card in the vehicle/company name

If you manage a fleet and want a smoother process, we can standardize what documents your drivers should keep in the vehicle.

What We Cannot Do Without Proof

For security reasons, we may be unable to provide service if:

  • Ownership/authorization cannot be verified, or
  • Required documentation is refused or unavailable, or
  • The situation presents clear signs of unauthorized access

Questions? Call Before Dispatch
